Collections

From an armlet to a zoomorphic buckle, our collection contains a huge range of material representing the diverse culture and history of Inverness and the HIghlands. Our collections feature geology, wildlife, archaeology and history and include fine art and crafts. Everything has a connection with the Highlands, and was made, used or collected here.

Like many museums, we only have space to display a small selection from our collections. To find out more about our collections, explore some of our objects in the catalogue below, or contact the Museu, on info@invernessmuseum.com for further details of collections in storage.

Wolf Stone

One of the most interesting and beautiful objects in our collections is this carving of a wolf, made by an unknown Pict in the 6th or 7th century.  Whoever created it was a superb craftsman – or woman – to make such a truly magnificent wolf in so few lines.  We chose this object because because the animal looks so alive that he could almost leap off the stone at any moment, although he was created 1500 years ago.

Penny Plane

This brooch is made of an old penny piece.  It was made by a mechanic at RAF Lossiemouth to give as a gift to his favourite young lady.  We chose this object because we liked the idea of making something very romantic out of such an ordinary thing.  We also admired the creativity that led to the idea of making it and the thought of someone working in his precious spare time to make a special present for somebody.
